A record-breaking summer
Our ninth annual COPi Cup Invitation Pro-Am Tournament took place in August this year. Thanks to concerns about COVID-19, we moved it to the summer when Pebble Beach Resort was fully open. We had our Sunday night dinner outdoors, and it was an enormous success.
Our players stepped up like never before. Tournament founder and host Phil Frengs will do almost anything to raise money for a good cause. This year, the man truly showed his commitment. When one attendee offered to match donations if Phil would shave his mustache, other players joined in. Together, they added $27,000 to bring the total raised this time to a record-breaking $239,000.
The pro competition came down to a card-off with Marcus De La Rosa, PGA from Santa Ana CC edging out Kyle Mendoza, PGA of The Farms GC with a lower back-nine score. Both pros finished the competition at 3 under.
The winning COPi Cup squad was from Sherwood CC in Thousand Oaks, CA. Players Jeff Fowler, PGA; Dan Cimino; Matt Lyons and Tim O’Neil walked away with the trophy. (Dan is the current President of the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation and Matt is a past president.)
To date, we’ve raised over $1,300,000 to help young scholars who may be the first in their families ever to attend college. These hardworking kids consistently contribute to their community. And our players’ willingness to help, to give back, gives these young scholars a chance that will change their lives.
