COPi Cup founder and Legistics CEO Phil Frengs will do almost anything to raise money for a good cause. Our annual tournament at Pebble Beach supports the SCGA Junior Scholarship Program, and this year’s event showed his commitment.
When one attendee offered to match donations if Phil would shave his mustache, other players joined in. Together, they added $27,000 to bring the total raised this time to a record $239,000. Take a look:
So far, the COPi Cup has raised over $1.3 million to help send under-served kids to college. 18 teams from across California competed for the Cup in a tournament driven by three principles: Competition, Camaraderie and Charity.
Competition
The pro competition came down to a card-off with Marcus De La Rosa, PGA from Santa Ana CC edging out Kyle Mendoza, PGA of The Farms GC with a lower back-nine score. Both pros finished the competition at 3 under. The winning COPi Cup squad hails from Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, CA. Players Jeff Fowler, PGA; Dan Cimino; Matt Lyons and Tim O’Neil walked away with the trophy. (Interestingly, Dan is the current President of the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation and Matt Lyons is a past president.)
Camaraderie
The COPi Cup takes its title from the original name for Legistics: COPi (Copies On Premise, Inc.) It’s a weekend full of friendship, great food and vibrant conversation, in addition to golf on some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the world.
“The COPi Cup once again exceeded expectations in terms of a fun-filled golf tournament and weekend, as well as the generosity of the participants to support our mission,” said SCGA Junior Golf Foundation Executive Director Kevin Gigax. “It’s a special weekend connecting with so many friends and supporters who care so deeply about the game and its future, as well as all the kids who benefit from our work.”
Charity
Phil is past Foundation president. He founded and hosts this annual invitational, providing the scholarship fund with sustained income.“As always, it’s good to be with old friends — and make new friends, too,” says Phil. “I’m so grateful to everyone who participated again this year. Their generosity and that of our matching partner group propelled us to our new record for annual giving. We can’t wait to go back to Pebble Beach for our 10th anniversary COPi Cup this upcoming March.”
